GENERAL INFORMATION

An Overview of the Timber Industry

Malaysia is blessed with lush verdant forests which house numerous hard timber species such as the Yellow Balau, Meranti, Kempas, Keruing, Mixed Light Hardtimber, Durian.

An abundance of timber and the presence of a well developed timber processing infrastructure have contributed to the rapid expansion of Malaysia’s timber-based industry. In fact more than 2,500 different timber types can be found in Malaysia of which about 400 are used commercially.

Generally, Malaysia’s timber products are divided into the following categories:

Saw timber

Veneer and panel products (plytimber, particleboards, fibreboards etc)

Mouldings and joinery (doorjambs, casings, skirting etc.)

Furniture and furniture components.

Malaysia is a major exporter of tropical hardwood logs, sawtimber, tropical plywood, veneer and mouldings. The timber industry contributes about 2.9 % of Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product and 5% of its total exports earning in 2005. Much of the country’s timber products are exported to USA, Japan, China, Vietnam, Middle East and other countries. In addition, all timber based products exported to major export markets, particularly the European countries are certified by the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) to ensure that they are derived from sustainably managed forests.

In conclusion, the forestry is the high value sector within Malaysia as the increasing demand for wood-based products will parallel the increasing supply of timber. These conditions are a boon for EMSB, as it will fuel the ability of our fully integrated timber operations to deliver high quality logs and sawn timbers in the medium and long term.
